UN: AIDS Drug Manufacturing in Africa Saves Lives, Eases Economic Woes

Submitted by MedHeadlines on April 22, 2009 – 11:00 pm2 Comments

To best fight the ravages of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa, it must begin manufacturing its own supply of generic drugs, according to Michel Sidibé, a 57-year-old resident of the African nation, Mali.  Sidibé has just been named Executive Director of UNAIDS, making him the first African to be appointed chief of this United Nations (UN) program.

Sidibé also says manufacturing the drugs in Africa is a lucrative way to provide the drugs to all Africans suffering from the virus while offsetting the impact of the global financial downturn, which is making it more difficult than ever for African citizens to afford or obtain treatment.  At the moment, only one African nation – South Africa – manufacturers the HIV/AIDS drugs it dispenses.

As many as 33 million people around the world are thought to be HIV positive.  Many of them are Africans or citizens of other developing countries.  Sidibé has vowed to make universal access to appropriate medical care the priority for his term in office.  He also acknowledges the difficulties in doing so, especially as the global financial crisis spreads economic woes from individual patients to medical facilities alike.

    To the authorities involved

This serves as a plea to everybody that is enlighted enough to produce some results on the research for the HIV/AIDS cure to please help.By that i mean for heaven’s sake the whole universe is suffering, there is nothing more concerning than this, people are dying like flies and there seems to me very less is being done about that.I feel that the medical researchers are doing very little to try combating this disease and as far as transparency about how have they gone is concerned i think that this is disgusting and definately unbearable.

I wish somehow somebody from somewhwre i don’t know may just come down and give us some relief, give us something to hold on to.Even if it meant that it would buy you few years guaranteed, atleast it would be worth it.

    Thanks

    I agree.

Everywhere people need help and that means strengthening drug development process around the world. There are companies like Xcelience that are making an effort to speed up the process of drug formulations for clients throughout the pharmaceutical industry.

Learning about the services and capabilities of drug formulation is an important to help as many people as we can.
