Peanut Butter Recalled in Latest Salmonella Scare

Submitted by MedHeadlines on 13 January, 2009 – 0:383 Comments

King Nut Companies, an Ohio-based regional distributor of peanut butter, has announced it is recalling two lines of peanut butter it ships, but does not manufacture, in response to the news that officials at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have targeted them as likely sources of the salmonella outbreak hitting 42 states in the past several months.  Thus far, reports indicate 399 people have become sick from salmonella infection.

Peanut Corp. of America is the manufacturer of King Nut and Parnell’s Pride brands of peanut butter, distributed by King Nut Cos.  These two entities have joined forces to “inform others of this problem,” in an effort to contain the outbreak.

Most of the product distributed by King Nut Cos. is delivered to institutions that include schools and hospitals.

Martin Kanan, president of the King Nut Cos., could not be reached for comment. But in a statement posted on the company’s Web site, Kanan said that the product could not be linked to all of the cases across the nation because it was distributed to only seven states, including Minnesota and Ohio.
