Young American Women Getting Tanned to Death

Submitted by MedHeadlines on July 12, 2008 – 4:42 pm13 Comments

The most lethal form of skin cancer is on the rise in American women aged 15 to 39, according to data provided by the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program, operated by the National Cancer Institute.  The number of cases of melanoma, the form of skin cancer in question, has risen in young women by as much as 50% between 1980 and 2004.  Authorities suggest the increasing popularity of tanning salons may be one reason for the dramatic increase in this cancer.

Melanoma cases among young women on the riseMelanoma is a cancer of the pigment-producing cells of the skin and the American Cancer Society estimates 62,480 new cases will be diagnosed this year, accompanied by 8,420 deaths associated with it.  Exposure to the UV rays from the sun and tanning salons is the most risky factor associated with the disease but other factors contribute.  People with the fairest skin tones are most at risk but people of all races and with all skin tones are susceptible to the disease.

Analysis of the SEER data revealed an increase in melanoma cases from 9.4 to 13.9 per 100,000 between 1980 and 2004 in young women between the ages of 15 and 39.  Melanoma rates among young men of the same age range remained stable, at 7.7 cases per 100,000.  Tanning salons are more popular among young women than young men and young women are also more likely to spend time tanning in direct sunlight, too.

Some researchers feel the rising rate of melanoma may be, in part, due to the improved methods of detection in recent years but many of the cancers included in the study were later-stage cancers.  When caught early, cancerous lesions are thin but they thicken as the disease progresses.  The earlier melanoma is detected, the better the chances for a cure.

To provide the best protection against developing melanoma, it is best to avoid sun exposure when it is most intense, between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.  Protective clothing and rigorous use of a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher is also recommended.  Perhaps more important is to refrain from active tanning whether it takes place directly in the sun or in a tanning salon.

    Hmmmm…….Let me think……Being tan and sexy and dying of cancer, or surviving the horrific ordeal…..or just being a little more pale than everyone else, and NOT looking like I am leathery 50 year old when I am 40. Choices, some are easier than others….But, I guess that is population control at work. Weeding out the ill-thinking…….

  • Miron says:

    well…
    once you get the disease it is hard to explain to yourself, “I just wanted to look more attractive”
    on the other hand, it is fairly natural to base in sun, no explanation needed
    and as far as being sexy you don’t need to apologies, not to me, please…

    Statistics is a great tool for some tasks, but in this particular case it is like to say, don’t eat because with food you get germs. To remain healthy you should get IV fluids three times a day 15 min, and inject liquids once every hour ( consult with your physician for best regiment )
    Realistically this article contributes zero to fighting cancer.

    The only way to fight cancer and other diseases that are deeply entrenched in the make up of our bodies, is to have personal doctor who is occupied 24x7x365 calculating statistical probabilities of our body getting perilous attack of disease, gathering and processing lab analysis of every secretion of our body ( and if need be its very fibers inside ) on one hand. And equally well trained professional constantly updating a list of all known ingredients that can fight a probable malady to devise appropriate medication and regiment to apply it to this unique case on the other hand.

    There is no such a doctor for every human, but there is a surrogate that can cover some portion of this work almost in every American household. It is called personal PC. Even if limited, the computers in our households are growing in their power, and the trend is only going to speed up. And if they can cover right now 10% of work ( and certainly gathering of analytical data 100% ). They certainly are growing up in their potential to cover a lot more with every new generation of Intel processors and Microsoft operating system.

    I am actually surprised that computers got shy of getting in this area for the past couple of years. It seems that folks just got too enamored with SETI and all the other shining stars ( Sun included ).

    As Olga Raieva once said, the difference between the human and the pig is that our eyes turned by nature in opposite direction, the former points to the mud, the later points to the horizon. But we got to get our focus down to the earth. There are very earthly day to day troubles that we often overlook while we are healthy, and once we are not, we really have too short of a time to get those addressed.

    I have never comprehended the fascination with tanning, I find it rather gross and unnatural. I have always loved the gals with porceline, fair complexions.

  • Steve says:

    Since sunscreens typically do not protect from UV rays, most of the products only help to prevent the less dangerous skin cancers, NOT MELANOMA. Advertising and labels on sunscreen products create an unwarranted sense of safety ,and the increased use that results may well be the major cause of the increase in melanoma rates. The FDA has been successfully lobbied to keep the agency from requiring more complete and accurate labeling. John Roberts was one of the agents involved representing the cosmetics industry. Yes, that John Roberts. I understand he omitted this work from his records submitted for confirmation to the Supreme Court.

    Additionally, while the holes in the ozone layer at the poles (created primarily by freon and aerosol products ) have been gradually diminishing, as the products are phased out, the ozone layer over the entire earth was thinned, and uv radiation did increase somewhat everywhere.

    That girl in the picture has a nice ass!

  • Michael says:

    Getting cancer from the sun has a whole lot more to do with heredity than it does with overexposure. If you are a fair skinned Irish or Scandinavian type, for example, your ancestors didn’t get exposed to as much sun as someone who shares that same lineage living in Phoenix, AZ. Moreover, that coupled with ozone layer depletion makes for a lethal combination for *certain* types of skin. Also, remember that the sun is a source of vitamin D. Studies have shown that lack of vitamin D is associated with susceptibility to various cancers. Not to mention the cancer causing ingredients in sunscreens themselves! I guess the idea should be moderation. A little bit of a golden glow is healthy and normal unless you want to spend your life living underground, which humans were not designed to do. Those that tan so much they look like an Italian handbag at 30 are asking for trouble.

  • Ben says:

    Hmmm. I think the chemicals and sun “screen” lotions are more dangerous than the life giving sun that’s been around since mankind’s existence. Also, vitamin D deficiency is perhaps a greater epidemic to be concerned about. Yes, yes, I know burning in the sun is bad for a person but I’d rather have that than petrochemicals slathered all over my body per the all knowing media networks. Has anyone stopped to consider that maybe these chemicals, when combined with UV rays, create more of a problem? In response to AJ, how is being in the sun “unnatural”?–the very statement is an oxymoron. Porcelain white isn’t healthy. Tanning beds? Ok, so those are a joke. :)

  • DJMDE says:

    The headline of the article alone is a joke. Women are not getting tanned to death. Where did someone come up with that title and how did it get passed your editor? Where is the scientific evidence that TANNING kills you? If you go to the government’s Center for Disease Controls website you wil see that the rate of deaths for young females has actually dropped significantly for those years. Of course Dermatologists want you to think there is an alarming 50% increase in melanoma among women…. it’s put’s out the fear factor and keeps their SPF lotions as a hot commodity. They can double to 70 billion dollars a year with ideas like this current one. Educate yourself, don’t let the media brainwash you into a stupidity zone.
    For the people saying you’ll look old and leathery that doesn’t work for me I”m 47 and have great skin with very few wrinkles and blemishes. I don’t wear very little makeup and never touch sunscreen. I would use a hat or umbrella before I would pay to put that junk on my face.

  • Marcina says:

    I’ve always been very fair skinned. I can’t tan, even if I wanted to. People have been making fun of me for having fair skin since I was a kid, and it’s ridiculous! I’m sorry, I didn’t realize my lack of pigmentation was hurting anyone!
    I’ve never ever had a sunburn that blistered or peeled because I learned at a young age how to take care of it. I see people my age who looks 5-10 years older and have moles and stuff. It’s pretty scary!
    Take care of your skin. It only takes 15 minutes to get enough vitamin D per day.

    As far as “slathering chemicals all over our bodies” I would suggest picking a more natural sunscreen. Don’t pick one that has been micronized, or contains PABA and stuff like that. It’s more expensive, but easier on the environment and your body.
    Honestly, the best way is to avoid the sun when the UV is really high and limit your exposure. That’s been my technique for years, since I am more high risk for skin cancer.

  • clubby says:

    The scandal between the Dermatologists and the sunscreen manufacturers continues to grow. There seems to be a direct money line between the two. All doctors took an oath to first, do no harm. However, many doctors have given in to the financial rewards for supporting the use of toxic sunscreens.
    Tanning salons really did not become popular until the 90″s for young women. TEN YEARS AFTER the supposed rate of melanoma began to rise. How do they explain that FACT away? Skin cancer just doesn’t start “overnight” either.
    One should never allow themselves to burn their skin. However, avoiding u.v.ligh exposure has been proven to damage the health of humans. Everything in life should been done in MODERATION. Drinking too much water can kill a human. Eating too much food can kill a human. It now seems that, listening to some doctors can do the same.

  • clubby says:

    Here’s some interesting items about the American Cancer Society. The scandal is getting wider and now includes the ACS.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    American Cancer Society opposes vitamin D
    This research on vitamin D is such good news that the American Cancer Society, of course, had to say something against it. An ACS spokesperson, Marji McCullough, strategic director of nutritional epidemiology for the American Cancer Society, flatly stated that nobody should take supplements to prevent cancer.
    If it seems surprising to you that the American Cancer Society — which claims to be against cancer — would dissuade people from taking supplements that slash their cancer risk by 77 percent, then you don’t know much about the ACS. In my opinion, the ACS is an organization that actually prevents prevention and openly supports the continuation of cancer as a way to boost its power and profits. The ACS is the wealthiest non-profit in America and has very close ties to pharmaceutical companies, mammography equipment companies and other corporations that profit from cancer. Notice the name, too: It isn’t the American Anti-Cancer Society, it’s the American Cancer Society! What they really stand for is right in the name!
    Click here to read more about the ACS and its financial ties to chemical companies, pharmaceutical companies and radiology equipment manufacturers.
    The cancer industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, and I’ve written extensively about the criminal organizations that protect and promote the industry. Just about everything the public is told about cancer by these cancer institutions is a lie. Those “race for the cure” cancer walks are a complete scam (they really aren’t searching for any way to prevent cancer or cure cancer, they’re only searching for new patented drugs to profit from cancer).
    This research on vitamin D is a huge threat to the cancer industry profit mongers because it reveals a way to prevent cancer for free — by seeking natural sunlight exposure and letting your skin manufacture your own powerful anti-cancer medicine (vitamin D). The idea that the cancer industry could lose 80% of its patients due to widespread education about vitamin D and sunlight scares the living daylights out of the cancer industry. Billions of dollars in cancer profits are at stake here, so the pro-cancer groups have to do everything they can to discredit vitamin D by creating doubt and confusion. The degree of dishonesty at work here is almost unbelievable to those who don’t really know what’s happening in the cancer industry.
