Asbestos Exposure and Mesothelioma Still an Issue

It was in the late 1970’s that legislators and businesses really started to eliminate the use of asbestos, which can lead to the deadly mesothelioma cancer. But products already made for distribution were never taken from the factory lines and people are still feeling the affects of asbestos exposure.

Last month, the main cruise ship for scientologists, which courted all of the scientology elite over the years including Tom Cruise, was found to have had extreme amounts of blues asbestos. Blue asbestos puts people at the greatest risk of all the asbestos types.

Just a couple weeks ago White House Chief of Staff during the Jimmy Carter administration, Hamilton Jordan, died of mesothelioma at the age of 63. How and where he was exposed to asbestos is unclear, but what is clear is most people over the years have come in contact with asbestos in some manner and early diagnosis is the best defense.

On the Lake Michigan shoreline in Illinois, where I’ve personally spent a fair amount of time along with Oprah and pretty much all Chicago residents, asbestos continues to wash up on shores. In an effort to help prevent future cases of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases, the Illinois Dunesland Preservation Society is offering tips to beachgoers to minimize the inhalation and ingestion of potentially deadly asbestos fibers. The society advises against eating and drinking at contaminated beaches, as well as disturbing the sand in any way. That’s not the most comforting advise in the world for people just looking to enjoy the summer breeze in the windy city.

If you are remodeling old homes asbestos exposure could be an issue and you should have professionals inspect your home first. The building I work in contains asbestos but it’s not a problem as long as it’s undisturbed and not in the ventillation systems.

You can find it as a risk for a number of professions past and present on naval ships, within the auto industry, home inspectors and the list goes on and on.

The overall amounts of asbestos have been reduced but it’s still a major problem. If you ever have been exposed the best thing to do is see a doctor, as mesothelioma my not even appear many years after asbestos exposure.

They also knew about the Asbestos but chose not to remove it because:

Until the 1960s, when the Freewinds was built, blue asbestos was often used in shipbuilding (it was not known at the time to be so carcinogenic). Former Scientologist Lawrence Woodcraft, a licensed architect by profession, supervised interior remodeling work on the ship in 1987 when the cult first purchased it. According to a legal affidavit made after Woodcraft left the cult in 2001, Woodcraft had notified Scientology officials immediately about the widespread blue asbestos and the dangers it posed. The response he received was that he should carry on with the work, and leave the asbestos where it was. Since Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard had never mentioned that asbestos was dangerous, they were not going to worry about it. Scientologists believe that disease is caused not by microbes or toxic substances, but by the presence of “suppressive persons” (SPs), or people who disagree with Scientology and its goals.

Who is going to tell all those people they were exposed??
    Wouldn’t you want to know??

The typical perception of asbestos exposure is of people who are exposed over long periods of time in very specific industrial settings. While it’s certainly true that the majority of patients diagnosed with asbestosis, mesothelioma or cancer from asbestos usually have worked in asbestos related occupations for a number of years, this isn’t the one source of exposure.

This is VERY scary. Why? well asbestos exposure which causes mesothelioma can take up to 40 years after exposure to be diagnosed. Cruise ships have asbestos materials still? This does not make me want to taje a vacation…which cruise ships were these?

There are multiple forms of mesothelioma. The differences involve the location in which the tumor begins, known as its origin site, and the type of cells that the tumor invades, known as its histological subtype
