More Expectant Moms Want Elective Cesarean
A survey of registered users at electivecesarean.com found that 56% of expectant mothers want an elective cesarean through their own choice. The majority said that it is because they don’t want to risk physical damage to their body (39.4%), a planned cesarean is preferable to an unpredictable planned vaginal delivery (PVD)(33.6%) and they’ve been put off by previous experience or knowledge of PVD trauma. (25.1%). Fear of PVD is cited by 16.7% of women. The survey was embarked upon because of suggestions in the past that cesarean section by maternal request (CSMR) is not a significant factor in the rise of cesarean rates (31.1% in the USA, 30.3% in Australia, 26.3% in Canada, 23.5% in England, 26.17% in Wales, 24.9% in Scotland and 23.9% in Northern Ireland). According to the website, in 2006, a survey in the United States found 0.4% incidence of CDMR, but in fact, the rate differs depending on the group of women asked. Women attending natural birth preparation classes for example are less likely to choose CDMR than those registering an interest at electivecesarian.com for example.
“So although electivecesarian.com found rates of up to 56% CDMR. We are not suggesting that this is the likely ‘national’ rate; simply that it indicates CDMR rates are of greater prevalence than previously estimated,” the website says.
