Wise Use of Cell Phones May Minimize Cancer Risk

Hands-free devices, shorter and less frequent calls, and holding a cell phone away from the body instead of pressed directly against the head may be some very important habits to incorporate to minimize the risk of various cancers of the head and salivary gland.  And try not to use a cell phone in the country.cell phone and cancerThese are the recommendations of Dr. Siegal Sadetzky, a scientist at Tel Aviv University in Israel.  She has recently published these recommendations, and the results of the study that generated them, in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Sadetzky’s study uncovered a link between excessive cell phone use and tumors of the parotid, or main salivary, gland.  The study indicates an increased risk of developing cancer at about 50% when cell phone usage is heavy and the phone is placed along the side of the head.

In the study, cell phone habits of 500 patients diagnosed with both benign and malignant tumors of the salivary gland was compared to the cell phone habits of 1,300 control subjects with no signs of cancer.

Israel was quick to embrace the use of cell phones and heavy use is common.  These factors make Israel prime ground for studying the long-range health effects of radiofrequency radiation emission, according to Sadetzky.

Because there are fewer antennas in the countryside, radiofrequencies must be stronger to ensure proper connection and therefore emit more radiation than cell phones used where antennas are more closely situated.

Sadetzky predicts a greater incidence of cancer in heavy users of cell phones and in children, as cell phone usage becomes even more widespread.  The technology is already common in about 90% of the Western world.
