Salt Water For Common Cold in Kids
Good news for parents, Atlantic Ocean salt water has been shown to effectively fight the common cold in children. Study conducted by researchers at the Teaching Hospital Brno in the Czech Republic, led by Dr. Ivo Slapak, included 400 children between the ages of 6 and 10. All of whom presented with symptoms of common cold. Participants were divided in to two groups, one receiving conventional common cold treatment, the other, a nasal wash comprised of a saline solution derived from Atlantic Ocean seawater. Patients were followed for a period of 12 weeks.
It was found that the group receiving seawater solution enjoyed less pronounced symptoms, lasting for a shorter period of time and a lower recurrence rate. While the exact mechanism of action is yet to be determined, researchers are very optimistic about the future use ofseawater solutions in the treatment of common cold in children. These findings come just days after the FDA issued a statement reminding parents that common cold and cough medications are not effective and may be dangerous when administered to children.
The study, published in the recent issue of Otolaryngology, was funded by the producer of seawater nasal spray, Goemar Laboratoires La Madeleine from France.
