Avoid Red Meat To Decrease The Risk Of Cancer

red meat linked to cancerMed Headlines - The data received from a new US diet and health study covering about half-a-million men and women between the age group of 50 to 71 years, reveals some astonishing inclinations about the link between cancer and different types of meat. The participants, none of whom had cancer previously, filled a questionnaire about their food habits over the past year. The study threw light on some surprising findings over the link between cancer and processed meat and red meat.

Participants were divided into five categories with respect to their average intake of red meat and processed meat. The findings suggest that the top fifth group of participants, whose average daily consumption of red meat was the highest, had the greatest risk of developing colorectal, lung, esophageal and liver cancer as compared to the consumption of the lowest fifth group of people. These findings provide concrete evidence that consumption of higher quantity of processed meats and red meat boosts the risk of developing colorectal and lung cancer as compared to the consumption of lower quantity of such meat products.

The outcomes of the study also suggest that in individuals who reduce the intake of red meat in their diet, the probability of lung cancer may be lowered to 1 in 10 and the risk of colorectal cancer may be reduced to 1 in 10 as well.

Other factors, such as, smoking were not included in the research. Moreover, factor like life-style might also have had an impact on occurrence of cancer. Somehow, the definition of processed meat and red meat also coincided as ham and bacon as these were included in both of the meat types. The specific kind of meat causing a certain type of cancer also remains a query unanswered. Whereas, the most of participants covered under the study were non-Hispanic white, hence the study cannot be associated to the people with different genetic groups. Thus, the study indicates that if consumption of red meat and processed meat is avoided, it will certainly reduce the chances of occurrence of different kinds of cancers.
